Hot Pot All Year? You Bet. Welcome to Taiwan

You have no idea how much Taiwanese people love hot pot. Seriously — it’s not just a winter thing. We eat hot pot all year long. Rain or shine, heatwave or typhoon warning, it’s always hot pot o’clock somewhere on this island.

When a group of friends wants to hang out but no one can decide where to eat, someone will inevitably say, “Hot pot?” And just like that — problem solved. Everyone agrees. Here’s the funny part: my husband still can’t get over the fact that we pay to cook our own food. “Isn’t that extra effort?” he asks. But to us, it feels effortless. There’s something satisfying about swirling beef slices through bubbling broth and timing your fish balls just right. Plus, it’s fun. It’s interactive. It brings people together.

That’s the beauty of hot pot — it’s both communal and personal. You share a pot, but make it your own. You craft your perfect dipping sauce (every Taiwanese person has a secret recipe), and you go at your own pace. It’s casual, cozy, and somehow always the right choice.

Hot pot, in a way, reflects Taiwanese culture. It’s about flexibility, variety, and making things work — together. Life can be hectic, but sitting around a table with people you like, cooking and chatting over a bubbling pot? That’s a little slice of calm.
